Closing Day

With apologies for my absence, I'm ready to get back to this and share our new home with all of you!  I have  been so excited to finally be able begin this new home series and now that things are continuing to come together I've taken the time to upload the pictures so far, I feel like I might be ready to get the show on the road.

We continue to be so thankful for our new home and excited about all of the new memories that we will have the opportunity to make here.  What a great blessing we've received with this house and what a great opportunity we have to share it with others.

We closed on a Friday and took the whole day off of work to celebrate and keep getting things ready for our move.  Our closing went really smoothly and was over in just about an hour, so we had plenty of time to bask in being new home owners.  If you know us, it will come as no surprise that the first thing we did after closing was go out for delicious and fun.

The next pictures are the before pictures that I took almost immediately when we were able to go into the house.  I wanted to get all of these before moving anything in.  I snapped so many pictures, not wanting to miss or forget anything.

Hands down, favorite picture of the whole day.  Winning hopscotch.

I don't have a good picture of the front of the house unfortunately, but it will be coming soon!  Coming next in this little home series:  painting, turning in the apartment keys, scaffolding, and more paint.

Stay tuned!

Slowly coming together

What a whirlwind of a weekend!  We were very thankful that our closing went smoothly and we were able to get started with our moving and painting in the new house.

I've been busy taking pictures each step of the way and hope to do a little "new homeowners" series beginning next week.

Were still living at the apartment though and just working at the house, so I don't think it has fully sunk in to me that we have a new home.  But, we do and I am so excited to share it with you!

Packing up and moving out

Okay, so mostly packing up, but still.  This is CLOSING WEEK!  Our little apartment is slowly being put back into boxes and getting ready to be moved to our new home.  Packing is not always the most fun thing, but it makes me feel really productive to be getting it done.

Guest room being taken over by boxes

One of the perks of our apartment is the very spacious outdoor storage closet that allowed us to keep all of our boxes from the move here during our stay so we are able to reuse all of them.  It has been really nice to have them out of sight (and mind) during our time here, and I am so thankful that they are all still in great shape and able to be used for this move.  I expect they'll be making a trip to the recycle bin soon though.  (Unless any one needs some moving boxes, then you should let us know!)

 Shelves slowly being cleared out

One of a few that are completely empty!!

It's been tough a little bit, knowing the best order to pack in, especially when you're still living somewhere and trying to avoid the living out of a suit case/box thing.  But, the closer we get, the happier and happier I become about having another cabinet or closet packed away.

And one that's not related to packing, but is delicious so I'll post it anyway.

This was the delicious cake and other sweet treats that one of our [very kind and hospitable] friends had on Saturday night to watch the UNC vs. Duke game.  And while the game was a little less than enjoyable, the company was not.  This doubled as a surprise party for one of our friends, which made it double the fun.

This week is a busy one, finishing up the packing and beginning the move.  I plan to take lots of pictures though, so be sure to keep an eye out.

The latest deal

Confession:  We almost ran out of toothpaste two weeks ago.  We kept mentioning to one another that "we really need[ed] to go pick up some toothpaste soon", but never would remember until it was too late (or early) to go out.

And lucky for us, our procrastinating paid off.  Target ended up having lots of crest and colgate toothpastes on clearance.  $2.98 for a package of 3, plus a $5 gift card for buying 3 packs.  We also had a coupon for $0.75 off 1 and got $0.05 off for using our own bag.

Deal for Real:

We used the $5 gift card to get an HDMI cable, surge protector, and screen cleaner set that was also on clearance for $4.58.

Love to find a good deal.

Some love for the apartment

Our hunt for a home is quickly turning into a reality and we are getting so excited about it!  Before, I didn't want to say too much about it, since everything was still new, still sinking in, and still not totally final.  But today, we have received the clearance to close, which means that everything necessary prior to closing has been approved.  We are in the process of scheduling a final walk through and are looking forward to our closing which is scheduled to happen in less than 2 weeks!

So for today, I'd like to take a little trip down memory lane and show some love for our current apartment, which I realize never got the proper welcome home tour.  And now since we're slowly starting to pack and I'm trying to get dinner cooked, you'll have to get the friends and family tour, meaning it is what it is.  Can't go back and clean now.

Exhibit A:  The state of our apartment upon our return from Cancun

The living room all cleaned up (with the Valentine's Day puzzle)

The kitchen and dining room

Guest bedroom and bathroom

Our HUGE bedroom upstairs (that includes both of our offices)

We have loved living here.  We enjoy that it is so accessible to our jobs, our friends, our church, and most of the places we ever want to go.

I am so looking forward to having a house that is ours, where I can start decorating and adding pretty things all around.  I'm foreseeing a lot of Pinterest and DIY in our future.

Re-potting the plants

During the summer of 2009, I had the privilege of serving on a team with my church and the wonderful ladies at the American School for Women and Children in Toledo, Ohio.  Before we left, the lady that hosted us in her home gave each of us a small piece of aloe vera, or "burn plants" as my grandmama used to call them.  [She always had them in her patio and would let us use them if we ever got a burn.]  They are great for all kinds of burns.  People are sometimes shocked that I use the gel inside, but if you've ever read the ingredients for the stuff you buy in the store, this is it.  The only caveat though:  since it's straight from the plan, it will dry a little bit green on your skin.  If you don't mind that, this stuff is so nice for your skin.

My small plant has grown, multiplied, and had to be re-potted several times.  Never like this though.  Thanks to some great weather, a huge bag of potting soil, some new pots from Durham Rescue Mission, and the wonderful hubs, I was able to do the biggest re-potting to date.

Unfortunately, I waited so long to do this, so lots of the roots were interconnected.  I'm really hoping that the small roots on the baby plant take hold and the plants continue to grow.

I am so proud of how it has grown the past 3.5 years!

Love this one!
