A big announcement for October: Blogger's Digest Social Media Link Up

Hey there!  I hope your weekend was amazing; I cannot believe that after today, September 2013 is in the history books.  Why does time keep flying by so quickly?

Last week was super busy for me (hence the reason it took me so long to answer your comments), so I was extra thankful for the weekend and excited for a "normal" week this week.  I say "normal" in quotes like that because there's something new every week, and that's ok.  :)

This is the time of year I love though - cool mornings and nights and warm, sunny days.  I hope it stays like this for a while.

Today is exciting though, because starting next post (Wednesday), I'll be co-hosting The Blogger's Digest:  A Blogging and Social Media Link-up with Jessica over at Pig & Dac!

The party will go live on Wednesday mornings each week, so be sure to link up and visit other blogs!  Stop by each week for new link opportunities!

So anyway, what is The Blogger's Digest?

The Blogger's Digest is a place for bloggers to share their latest {or greatest} posts and build connections with other bloggers. You can also share your blog's social media links so we can all follow along!

Be sure to stop by and share the link up.  I can't wait to see what you've been up to!

Liebster Award | Part 2

Last week, I mentioned being excited about being nominated for not only 1, but 2 Liebster Awards!  And because I only got to answer questions for one of the awards, I'm back today to answer questions for the others.  I think it's more fun spread out over 2 posts because it's like double the getting to know you questions, and keeps these posts from being small books.

To see the first award, check out last Monday's post here.

Five on Friday

Happy Friday!

Like weeks are sometimes, this week was packed and tonight is the only night on the calendar that did not have an activity of some sort.  So, the pictures are a little bit limited, but I've enjoyed these top 5 posts so much, I definitely don't want to miss the last Friday of the month!  (I can barely believe I just said that.  Wasn't it July just last week?!)

1. Pumpkin Spice Lattes.  I just had my first one ever recently and like almost everyone else I know - I'm a fan.

2.  This orange sweater dress.  I love the red skinny belt and cannot wait to wear this when it gets a little bit cooler.  I had just read April's post here about fall brights over at A. Liz Adventures.  I recently picked up a bright yellow cardigan and I've got a cobalt skirt and green jeans already.  So when I saw this Calvin Klein dress, regularly well over $100 for just $24.99, I knew it was coming home with me.

Another bit about thrifty fashion

If you're a regular around here, you've probably seen this post, which was my very first (and until now, only) post about thrifty fashion.  Although, I guess it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that many of the clothes in my closet found there way there either by way of a thrift store or some deep deep discount on a clearance rack at some of my favorite retail stores.

And like many of the other thrifty things we do around here in the Thrift for Today house, I sometimes don't even think about wear second hand clothes because it's such a normal part of my fashion, but I've been thinking more about how much I spend on my outfits, and it always makes me happy when I pull off something thrifty and cute at the same time.

So with that, I give you this little number from last week, the button down shirt and skinny belt:

That shirt is from Old Navy originally, but came to me via thrift for a whopping $2.99.  Do I love it?  Yes, I do.  And I especially love it with that gold glitter skinny belt (not thrifted, but came with the dress I wore here...you better believe I mix and match these things!)

And the point of this post is mostly about the fun shirt/belt combo, but I can't leave without first showing you the whole get up.  These jeans are from a Gap outlet clearance rack and with an additional discount from my AAA membership, the were just $6 and some change.  They are my favorites this season.

And one last picture on the front porch steps for good measure.  Tell me all about your thrifty outfits.  What are you wearing these days?

Liebster Award | Three cheers for Monday!

Well, this is a happy Monday!  Last week, I had the privilege of being nominated for not one, but two (!!!) Liebster Awards by some fellow bloggers.  That calls for a great big hip hip hooray for Thrift for Today!  I am so excited about all the new things happening over here in blog land!  I've been enjoying keeping up with and sharing the fun things we create and ideas that we have over here and lots of that has to do with some of the new blogs I've found and added to my reading list.

High Five for Friday

It's Friday, Friday!  And that means that it's time for another weekend and another High Five!  I hope you have had a great week and have an even greater weekend up ahead!

This has been a busy week over here.  Do you ever have one of those weeks where there are so many blog-worthy things to post about, but not enough time to write it all out?  Yep, that was this week.

So, you should sit back, grab some sweet tea and consider this a little preview for the posts to come.

1.  Taylor Swift in concert.  Yep, I went with the hubs and my brother in-law to a super fun, super teenage girl packed out concert and was totally not disappointed. So, in lieu of photos on today's blog, you should feel free to turn up the speakers and put on your party pants.

Brown sugar cookies

If you follow me on pinterest, you may have noticed that I recently separated my pinned dinner/real food pins from the dessert pins.  The result was a little less than surprising to me....I have more than double the dessert pins.  Sweet tooth, much?!

And after all that was sorted out, of course I wanted to try something new.  So, I decided to give this recipe for brown sugar cookies a try (you might have seen these cookies on the Five on Friday, recently).  I'm a big fan of chocolate chip cookies, and am still on the hunt for the best recipe, but figured that since I'd never had [or don't remember ever having] brown sugar cookies, this might be fun.  And it certainly was.

These are some of the softest cookies I've made.

DIY Fall Wreath

Today I'm sharing this fun little wreath I made a while back that's been hanging on my door in anticipation of milder temperatures and some pumpkin friends once I get out to the pumpkin patch (or grocery store, whichever comes first).

And I'm posting early this week to link up with "Get Your DIY On: Fall Party Challenge".  Head over to check out lots of other fun wreaths and fall ideas!

Now, onto the wreath:

High Five for Friday

Welcome back, Friday, you old faithful friend!  For the third Friday in a row, I'm happy to be linking up with my top 5's of the week.  This week is kind of a random mix of things all of which have made me smile.

-ONE-
Free Krispy Kreme.  This one should be pretty self explanatory.  Cream filled doughnut and coffee on Monday morning?  Yes, please.  :)

Putting away the summer whites

This post is a mix of thrifty fashion and an official "until next year" to white shorts. There are some "rules" of fashion that I'm willing to break - like the occasional black/brown mix.  But I just can't when it comes to wearing white shorts after labor day.  [This of course, does not include winter whites and I love a cream colored pea coat.]  Growing up, I waited for Easter Sunday to wear white shoes to church and then quickly put them away after labor day.  And even though it's definitely still warm enough for shorts, the white ones are away until next year.

But, don't worry, I made sure to get them in at least once more over the long labor day weekend.  And I'm pretty happy to share their final appearance for the season.  [Disclaimer:  I feel a little bit showy having a post completely dedicated to what I'm wearing, but frankly, I loved this outfit and I love seeing what other bloggers come up with from their closets, so here it is.]

Big Kid Bagel Bites

Before we get started, I should let you all know that this quick and easy meal/snack idea comes from the hubs and a "whatever's in the fridge" Saturday meal plan.

I don't know about you, but growing up, pizza snacks were a hit around our house.  Whether it was bagel bites or pizza rolls, my mom knew she could count on those for a no-fuss, quick snack.

And I just forget about how yummy those things I liked as a kid are sometimes.  And then we were low on groceries, and the hubs was hungry and the next thing I knew, I was reminiscing on my childhood and eating these "Big Kid Bagel Bites".

Five on Friday

And just like that, another week has come and gone.  This week really seemed to fly by since Monday was a holiday.  But nonetheless, the weekend is here again like an old, trusty friend and I have about zero complaints about that.

You may remember that last Friday I not only celebrated 100 published posts on le blog, but also decided to link up with some of the Five on Friday parties around blog-land to share some of the little things that have made me smile this week.  And because I had so much fun with that, and I loved to see what things y'all were enjoying last week, I've decided to do the same thing this week...and if I don't watch out, this might become a regular Friday thing around here. That could be fun.

So here they are, in no particular order:

-ONE-  These shoes. They were kind of an impulse buy to be honest.  I had dinner with a friend from college right beside the mall, so naturally we decided to walk the mall after we'd eaten.  You know, to burn off some of dinner, or at least to let it digest.  Mostly to continue our conversation without keeping a table at the restaurant.  While there, we happened to take a look at some clearance racks and when I saw these lovelies on sale at JC Penney for just $9.99 minus an additional 25%, I quickly tried them on and welcomed them to my closet.

Now before you think I'll be wearing these across campus to the office, I won't be.  But I will be wearing them to all sorts of fun events and for less than $10, I promise to get my money's worth from them.  Welcome home, little shoes!

Budgeting Series: Part 3 | The budget and unexpected expenses

Hey there!  Welcome back to our Budgeting Series!  We took a break last week to have some link-party fun and what fun it was!  There were lots of great links full of fun ideas and delicious recipes.

In case you missed the other parts, you can catch up here and here.  So far we've talked about why budgeting matters and how to create a budget.  Today we're talking about what happens when despite your best efforts, the budget goes awry because of something unexpected.

August re-cap and looking forward to September

Happy Monday, happy Labor Day, and happy September y'all!

This is actually my birthday month, so I especially like September.  It's also one of the busiest months for me at work with students, administrative deadlines, and event planning.  There's so much going on and I don't want to complain even one little bit.  There is a lot of fun planned this month and I'm looking forward to all of it!!

But, before we get started, I wanted to go back to this post where I shared my goals for August and give a little update on where I stand with each of them and make a new list for September.

1. Have a regular quiet time.  Better than I was, still not where I'd like to be, but it's a work in progress.  This one will for sure be a constant from month to month.

2. Exercise at least 3 times per week.  Didn't happen.  I don't really have anything to say about this, other than I'm still doing zumba, and we're going on walks after dinner some now that the weather is cooling down, but it's hard to find motivation at the end of the work day and after dinner.

3.  Get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.  I'm not sure if I got 7 hours of sleep every night, but we have been making an effort to go to bed earlier, and I am definitely feeling more rested these days.

4. Finish painting the trim and baseboards in the upstairs hallway, the master bedroom, and kitchen.  Also didn't happen, but I'm working on it.  It's not that fun, but it makes a huge difference.  Who knew that it took so long to paint stair spindles?  Not this girl.

5.  Try at least 1 new recipe (and hopefully 2).   See here and here

6.  Continue to post at least 3 times/week.  Done.  And I hope to continue this.  I did have several posts started, which helped, but these days there are more in my head than in "draft" stage on the blog.  Working on that.

7.  Find a cleaning routine for our home.  There is definitely progress being made, but still room for improvement.
